Webasto signs agreement on proposed stake in Chinese joint venture
The German automotive supplier strengthens its competitiveness in China’s rapidly growing market for fixed glass roof solutions.
Stockdorf – May 26, 2026 – Webasto has signed an agreement to acquire a 30 percent stake in a newly established joint venture with Chinese glass manufacturer Zhejiang Fujia Technology (FJT). The aim of the partnership is the joint development and production of so-called Fixed Transparent Modules (FTMs) – fixed glass roof systems –for the fast-growing Chinese market. The agreement is subject to antitrust approval in China.
With this joint venture, Webasto gains competitive access to the world’s largest and highly dynamic market for FTM solutions. A key success factor is the expansion of value creation in glass processing: together with FJT, Webasto is systematically broadening its capabilities – from glass pre-processing to the integration of innovative technologies into modern roof systems.
FJT contributes extensive expertise in glass production and pre-processing as well as a strong local market position. Webasto complements this with its long-standing system and integration expertise in vehicle roof systems. Together, the partners aim to develop technologically advanced and cost-efficient FTM solutions for Chinese OEMs. The focus is on new functionalities in roof glass, including integrated lighting, intelligent shading solutions, solar technologies and entertainment features.
“China is a key market for us with specific technological and market requirements. With this investment, we are pursuing a focused approach: together with our partner, we are laying the foundation for competitive FTM solutions and securing access to a forward-looking high-tech segment in China. By combining our expertise, we are further transforming the vehicle into an ‘experience space’ – a key differentiator, particularly in the Chinese market. And the good thing is that Webasto can also offer these roofs in openable versions,” says Webasto CEO Joerg Buchheim.
Chinese car manufacturers are increasingly focusing on innovative interior and comfort concepts, in which large fixed and openable glass roofs play a central role. Both FTMs and large openable panoramic glass roofs combine modern design with technological functionality and high cost efficiency, and are becoming increasingly important for local manufacturers.
Through this partnership, Webasto is further expanding its presence in the Chinese market and strengthening its cooperation with local OEMs. This step underlines the company’s long-term commitment to China and its clear focus on strategic partnerships in high-growth segments.
