Air Flow: modular PTC air heaters for electric commercial vehicles

Starting in July, thermal technology specialist Webasto will launch modular PTC air heaters with up to 2,100 watts of heating power for electric commercial vehicles. The “Air Flow” modules can be flexibly combined or installed and controlled individually within the vehicle’s interior.

Modular PTC air heaters for electric commercial vehicles

Stockdorf – April 21, 2026 – Fuel-powered vehicles are increasingly being replaced by electric vehicles. Unlike internal combustion engines, however, electric motors generate very little waste heat to warm the interior. Electric heaters are ideal for this purpose; they draw power from the drive battery via a voltage converter integrated into the vehicle—the electrical power take-off (ePTO).

Webasto uses PTC heating technology for its new 12-volt air heaters. PTC (“Positive Temperature Coefficient”) refers to an electric heating element whose resistance increases as the temperature rises. As it gets hotter, less current flows, causing it to regulate itself and prevent overheating. These heating elements are very safe, efficient, and durable.

One module of the new Webasto heater measures 200 x 155 x 150 millimeters (L x W x H) and delivers up to 700 watts of heating power. In addition, there are pre-assembled systems consisting of two or three modules, with which up to 1,400 or 2,100 watts of system power are available, respectively. However, individual modules can also be installed decentrally in the vehicle. This is particularly advantageous for electric vehicles with limited installation space or where different temperature zones are desired.

The heat can be easily and precisely distributed throughout the vehicle via air hoses, with various outlet options available. The heating output can be adjusted automatically or manually in three stages to quickly reach and maintain target temperatures. A variety of manual and digital controls are available. App control via Bluetooth is in development. Depending on the chosen control method, various heating programs and timer options with individual settings are available.
