| New engine-independent, electric compressor parking air conditioner for commercial vehicles |
 |
Stockdorf/Munich - 24.09.2008 - At the IAA Commercial Vehicles Webasto is presenting a new product development for the cooling industry: the Webasto Park & Cool parking air conditioner. This can be seen at the Webasto stand in hall 12, stand B08. With this new product Webasto is supporting freight carriers' and drivers' efforts to reduce their engines' idling. Webasto Park & Cool is an efficient, twin-component compressor unit for electric operation. It runs independently of the engine and makes an important contribution towards avoiding engine idling for trucks, something that is currently still far too widely practiced. The parking air conditioner provides cool and dry air in the driver's cab – and hence a pleasant climate whilst parking and taking recuperation breaks. The product launch is planned for the beginning of 2009.
"The principle of a compressor air conditioner is that the air is not only cooled but also demoisturized to create a climate in trucks' interiors during parking breaks that is the same as drivers are accustomed to from air conditioners that operate while trucks are being driven“, explained Philip van Ast, director of the Commercial Vehicles department of the Global Comfort Solutions business division of Webasto AG. "Since an electric parking air conditioner cools more efficiently than an idling engine in a parked vehicle, it also saves money. In our opinion avoiding idling is an important contribution towards climate protection“.
Lower power consumption and optimal comfort When required a boost function provides rapid cooling. For this function Webasto Park & Cool uses around 14 amperes of battery power. If the driver's cab has already been precooled during a journey, normal operation of the air conditioner is sufficient. It only uses a mere seven amperes of battery power. However, if the voltage in the on-board network should fall below 21.5 volt, a battery monitor automatically switches off the air conditioner. Currently Webasto Park & Cool is only available for 24-volt on-board networks. Not only the climate is comfortable but also its operation. Webasto's innovation enables temperature and air volume to be controlled separately. The starting time can also be pre-selected. All functions are not only available on an integrated user interface at the evaporator unit, but also via a practical remote control.
Flexible assembly Webasto Park & Cool consists of two parts. The external condenser unit can be either mounted on the roof or on the backwall of the driver's cab, depending on the available space. Amongst other things, this roof split unit or backwall split unit contains the compressor and the condenser unit. Two coolant lines connect it to the evaporator unit , which is fitted in the interior. The flexible concept of the split unit enables the evaporator unit to be mounted in different places, for instance in the driving cab above the driver or in the sleeping cab. Webasto's global dealership network in over 40 countries and its traditional customer service is ready to sell and install the product. Both parts of the Webasto Park & Cool are available in a modern design. The unit that is fitted on the roof is also aerodynamically optimized. The modern parking air conditioner is based on tried and tested technology. The compressor operates with CFC-free coolant R134a. The system only requires the same normal maintenance as all other cooling systems.
