Webasto designs a microparticle filter for bus air conditioning systems...and the air is clean!
Stockdorf/Munich. – The high concentration of exhaust emissions and microparticle dust in the atmosphere, and above all in our towns and cities, is one of the hottest topics on the environmental agenda. To offer bus passengers the best possible protection against the effects of these kinds of emissions, special filters for air conditioning systems have been used for some time now and are based on a wide range of operating principles.

The new microparticle filter from Webasto sets as yet unparalleled standards in terms of efficiency and economy. In contrast to the widely used systems based on paper, these are flexible, electrostatically charged microstructure filters made from a flame-retardant material that maintain their outstanding filtration properties even at very considerable air flow rates. With especially critical microparticle dust in particular, the new filtering system traps at least 18 times as many particles as conventional metal filters. The fraction separation level with the new Webasto filter approaches 70 percent with particle sizes of 0.03 µm. The performance of metal filters in this sensitive area is around 3 percent! Thanks to the constantly high air flow rate, the air conditioning system can operate with optimum efficiency at all times, therefore delivering a consistent cooling performance. In addition, the material does not present any problems from a microbiological perspective and its odour generation is practically zero. The dust accumulation capacity is around 40 % greater than in metal filters.

The material is very flexible and therefore can easily be formed. As a result, the Webasto microparticle filter can be installed or replaced if necessary in a time-saving and straightforward operation. It is positioned immediately ahead of the evaporator. Providing it is regularly cleaned using a conventional industrial vacuum cleaner or compressed air, it is sufficient to replace the filter once a year – something that bus companies will certainly appreciate on grounds of cost if nothing else.

Passengers on the Munich public transport system are amongst the first to benefit from optimally filtered air conditioned air. From November 2005 the buses are available with the new filter system.
